National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

September 18, 2025 marks National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAD)—a vital observance spotlighting the growing number of older adults living with HIV, as well as those aging with and beyond their diagnoses. This day underscores the importance of tailored prevention, testing, treatment, and care strategies for older individuals and long-term survivors. HIV.govHIVinfoAIDSVu

Here’s why this matters now:

● Over 50% of people living with diagnosed HIV in the U.S. are age 50 or older, with older age groups making up a rapidly growing portion of the population. HIVinfoCDC

● Numerous aging-related challenges accompany living with HIV—including increased risks of cardiovascular complications, neurocognitive decline, treatment complexity, social isolation, and stigma. CDCAIDSVu

● Roughly a third of newly diagnosed older adults already have late-stage HIV at diagnosis—highlighting critical gaps in awareness and screening. AIDSVu

Why It Matters to LGBT Senior Housing and Care

We believe that affirming housing is healthcare. LGBTQ+ elders aging with HIV often face compounded barriers—from health disparities to social isolation and stigma. By cultivating affirming, intergenerational environments, we stand at the intersection of HIV care and dignified aging—a critical space where visibility, connection, and tailored support truly matter.

This NHAAD, let's:

● Honor long-term survivors, whose resilience and advocacy helped shape today’s treatments.

● Amplify awareness that HIV is not confined to any age group, and that older adults deserve equitable access to screening, care, and support.

● Advocate for holistic care strategies that address physical, cognitive, and mental health—plus the intersections of stigma and loneliness.

● Feature stories of LGBTQ+ elders aging with HIV to humanize and uplift their experiences.

Together, we can ensure that growing older with HIV is met not with invisibility, but with dignity, respect, and unwavering support.
