September 27, 2025 marks National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NGMHAAD)—a national observance dedicated to combating HIV stigma and promoting testing, prevention, and treatment among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) Wikipedia+14HIV.gov+14CDC+14.
This year, we recognize both progress and persistent disparities:
● New HIV infections among gay and bisexual men have decreased by approximately 10% overall, with a 31% drop among young MSM (ages 13–24) NACCHOCDC+1.
● Yet, inequities remain stark—67% of new HIV infections in 2022 were among gay and bisexual men, and nearly half (47%) of those occurred in the U.S. South, with Black and Hispanic/Latino MSM disproportionately affected Wikipedia+8CDC+8AIDSVu+8.
In recent years, efforts such as the CDC’s “PrEPared” social marketing initiative have encouraged PrEP uptake in communities most affected by HIV—but barriers persist in many areas CDC+1.
At LGBT Senior Housing and Care, we honor our LGBTQ+ elders, including gay and bi+ seniors living with or aging into HIV. We understand how compounded stigma, healthcare access challenges, and isolation uniquely impact MSM elders. That’s why our work centers on creating affirming, intergenerational communities that integrate LGBTQ+ elder care with HIV-informed support.
This NGMHAAD, here’s how you can act:
● Promote testing and access to PrEP—especially in your networks and communities.
● Share stories of resilience—from both younger MSM and elders living with HIV.
● Advocate for reduction of structural barriers—including racism, homophobia, and healthcare inequities.
● Elevate the “S” in aging and sexual health—older MSM deserve inclusive, affirming HIV care too.
By standing
together across generations, we can transform awareness into action. Let’s ensure that aging MSM with HIV do so with dignity, visibility, and support.
