Southern Aids Awareness Day (SHAAD) 8/20

ree

August 20, marks Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) — a critical observance spotlighting the disproportionate HIV burden across the U.S. South. In 2022, Southern states accounted for over half of all new HIV diagnoses, even though the region represents just about 38% of the nation’s population HIV.gov+15AIDSVu+15AIDSVu+15. Structural factors such as poverty, limited access to health care, and systemic stigma continue to amplify these disparities—especially among Black communities AIDSVuVirginia Department of HealthSouthern AIDS Coalition.

As we face ongoing challenges—from healthcare inequity to the rising political threats impacting LGBTQ+ and public health protections—a day like this reminds us of the urgent need for community-led advocacy and inclusive care initiatives aidsetc.org+14vogue.com+14AIDSVu+14.

At LGBT Senior Housing and Care, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ elders, including those aging with HIV. By centering intergenerational care and affirming housing environments, we help bridge gaps in access and reduce the stigma that often isolates older LGBTQ+ individuals living with HIV. We stand in solidarity with SHAAD’s 2025 theme “Power to the People!”—uplifting voices that demand equitable HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care across all communities.

Join us as we:

● Emphasize the intersection of aging, LGBTQ+, and HIV care

● Call for expanded access to PrEP and culturally competent care in the South

● Advocate for reducing social determinants of health barriers affecting our neighbors

Together, we can build a future where LGBTQ+ elders living with HIV age with dignity, support, and community. 💪🌈
