🟣 October 26 — Intersex Awareness Day is a global moment to uplift intersex visibility, challenge harmful practices, and affirm bodily autonomy. On this day in 1996, intersex activists first protested outside a pediatric conference in Boston, demanding that medical bodies end non-consensual surgeries on intersex infants and respect intersex voices. interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth+2Intersex Day+2

Today, disturbing trends demand our attention: an EU rights agency recently reported a sharp rise in violence and harassment targeting intersex individuals across 30 European countries — including non-consensual medical interventions and hate-motivated abuse. The Guardian Meanwhile, in 2024 the UN Human Rights Council passed its first resolution protecting intersex rights — affirming that discrimination on the basis of “innate variations of sex characteristics” is a human rights issue. At LGBT Senior Housing and Care, we affirm that intersex elders — like all LGBTQ+ elders — deserve dignity, respect, and visibility. Many have lived through eras of stigma, erasure, and medical decisions made without consent. Our mission is to build affirming communities where all bodies and identities are honored.
This Intersex Awareness Day, we join efforts to:
● Center intersex voices and lived experience
● Advocate for policies banning non-consensual surgeries on infants
● Support intersex-led organizations that strive for rights, health equity, and autonomy
● Educate our staff, residents, and broader community about intersex inclusion
Let’s move beyond silence to solidarity — recognizing that the fight for intersex justice is integral to our broader commitment to affirming LGBTQ+ elder lives. 🏳️ ⚧️🧡
